Another receiver has been signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quez Watkins, a former speedster for the Philadelphia Eagles, is joining them this time. Since the start of free agency, Pittsburgh has added two wide receivers, including Watkins. Van Jefferson, a former pass catcher for the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams, is the first.

Over the previous four seasons, Watkins started 25 games for the Eagles and caught 98 passes for 1,249 yards and six touchdowns. In 2021, Watkins had his greatest season, catching 43 catches for 647 yards on 62 targets.

Many of the glaring voids at wide receiver that were left after Diontae Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers are not entirely filled by Watkins. Watkins does have lightning-fast 4.3 speed, but neither size nor blocking prowess come with him. Usually, the latter is necessary if you want to be a receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Calvin Austin and Watkins will probably compete for a spot in the slot. Despite Watkins’ greater height (6’0″), Austin and Watkins have many similarities.

Watkins’ signing doesn’t significantly impact Pittsburgh. The 2024 NFL Draft will still compel them to select a wide receiver in the first or second round. It will be difficult to find someone to replace George Pickens right away, especially if they don’t get past the first round. However, it appears that’s the way the squad is heading.

Watkins’ arrival might make it impossible to sign Tyler Boyd, a former receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. Last week, there were rumors circulating that Boyd and the Steelers were at a financial impasse. Boyd is probably thought of as a slot receiver, and they now have two of those
