Leeds United could spend £15m on two much more important signing …

This week, a report from This Is Anfield stated that Leeds is among the teams presently monitoring Anthony Patterson, the Sunderland stopper.

After making a strong comeback to the Black Cats lineup in recent seasons, Liverpool, Arsenal, Celtic, and Leicester City are among the teams interested in signing the 23-year-old goalkeeper.

The England U21 international is reportedly demanding for between £10 and $15 million, but that amount may seem excessive for a player who won’t necessarily be a significant improvement over Illan Meslier in the upcoming campaign.

While we don’t think Connor Roberts should sign a contract with Leeds this summer when his loan period expires, the right-back position requires a lot of attention.

It’s obvious that we need one or two right-backs in the summer after we’ve had two loans this season and Archie Gray has spent the majority of the season playing out of position to cover.

Right-back would be a more apparent position to add competition if Leeds had £15 million to spend this summer than goalkeeping.

Large expenditures are required to strengthen our front line and possibly our attacking midfield if we advance, but if you need talent at right-back, you might not have to shell out a lot of cash.

The same logic applies to the left-back position, with Leeds’ cover for next season not looking too ideal.

We currently have Junior Firpo and Sam Byram more than holding their own across the season, but both are injury prone and perhaps not up to the task defensively in the Premier League.

For £15million, you could easily sign someone that does the job of getting up and down the flank for 90 minutes.

Clubs in the top flight have proven that, with Milos Kerkez heading to Bournemouth for £18million, Pervis Estupinan heading to Brighton for £15million, and Alex Moreno joining Aston Villa for £13.3million – there’s value out there in these two full-back positions.

If Leeds want big spends, then you could replace Meslier with a significant improvement, or look to spend that money higher up the pitch on a game-changer, like Nottingham Forest did with Morgan Gibbs-White – a player single-handedly ensuring they will be a PL side each season.
