the league we most have it again ‘The club wants to be the best’ – Mamelodi Sundowns coach targets Fifa Club World Cup

Coach Rhulani Mokwena of Mamelodi Sundowns discusses his team’s aspirations for success on the international stage.

Sundowns advances to the quarterfinals of the CAFCL

Mokwena discloses her goal of making it to the FIFA Club World Cup.

But the group must also concentrate on the PSL.

The club’s ultimate goal is to play in the 32-team Club World Cup after finishing first in Group A of the Caf Champions League and making it to the quarterfinals.

Al Ahly SC and Wydad Athletic Club have already clinched two African berths; Sundowns hopes to get into the competition, which is scheduled to take place in the United States in June 2025.

Al Ahly SC and Wydad Athletic Club won the last two Caf Champions League championships to guarantee qualification for African teams at the Fifa Club World Cup.

Apart from the two North African heavyweights listed above, Sundowns and Esperance de Tunis are also competing for the two berths that are still open.

“It’s the club’s ambition, the club wants to not only be one of the best clubs in the African continent but of course [also] from a global perspective and the reach is unbelievable,” Mokwena said after the match against TP Mazembe on Saturday, March 2nd.

“I spent some time in Brazil in the off-season and during the break in early parts of January, what we’ve done is incredible, you go to Brazil [and] they speak, ‘Ow! You are the Sundowns coach’.

“The first thing they talk about is the type of football we’re playing at almost every single club. You go to Fluminense, they ask ‘How do you get the team to play like that?’ You go to Flamengo, you go to Vasco,

They call Botafogo “unbelievable.” They follow us, it’s amazing,” he continued.

“You can only image how far this football team can go if their success is solely based on their on-field exploits. Imagine how much potential they have as a club.”

He said, “So it’s the club’s ambition and one we have to work very, very hard to try to reach, but with the quality that we have, the support we get from the club, it’s definitely a possibility.”
