Roll Call, June 1, 2024: Former Alabama Quarterback Returns to College Football

After following his offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Tuscaloosa in order to play for the Crimson Tide, Tyler Buchner played quarterback for Alabama for one season. Jalen Milroe was selected to start instead of Buchner.

However, following Milroe’s poor performance in Alabama’s defeat against Texas, Buchner was given his chance with a USF start. Buchner finished the now-famous game 5 of 14 for 34 yards. After he made the decision to re-enter the transfer portal and return to Notre Dame to play a different sport, he concluded his Crimson Tide career with 61 total yards and no touchdowns.

In an autobiographical piece published on the official athletic website of Notre Dame, Buchner stated, “I had been drawn to Alabama by opportunities that glistened like gold in the Southern sun.” “My mind was filled with doubt and I made the shift with a heavy heart. Persuasive voices, shimmering possibilities, and whispers were all in my ear. At twenty-one, the lure of the transfer portal and the prospect of playing for Coach Saban for a season seemed more appealing than the pain of leaving the Fighting Irish behind in order to pursue an NFL career. But it took me a season to remember why I had originally decided to attend Notre Dame.was the reason I cherished Notre Dame
