just now; An ex-Fifa match official claimed that Mamelodi Sundowns were robbed in the Nedbank Cup final versus Orlando Pirates because “the referee gave a penalty which was incorrect” following the Maswanganyi and Modiba incident.

Regarding two contentious penalty calls made by referee Skhumbuso Gasa during the Nedbank Cup final, a retired match official has provided his opinion.

Sundowns experienced two thefts.
Two penalties were called in the Pirates vs. Downs Nedbank Cup final.

Consequently, what happened?
Victor Hlungwani, a former PSL, CAF, and FIFA referee, feels that Pirates’ penalty call, which enabled them to successfully defend their Nedbank Cup championship, was erroneous.

Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were given two contentious penalties by match referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa at Mbombela Stadium.

Patrick Maswanganyi was able to score for the Buccaneers but Lucas Ribeiro Costa was unable to convert for Masandawana.

Hlungwani gave an explanation of why Pirates should not have received the penalty while speaking on Soccer Zone.

WHAT WAS VOICED
Hlungwani stated on SABC’s SoccerZone, “We saw Khuliso Mudau getting into the box and Deon Hotto impeded his opponent’s progress. Impeding an opponent is a direct free kick offence.”

“We witnessed Hotto placing his leg in Mudau’s path in this instance, so the referee, who was in a good position, ‘s progress.”

“The referee made the right decision,” he continued.

“It is a lovely decision, but there is an opponent, and that opponent is the law, whether you like it or not.”

WHAT’S MORE?
Additionally, Hlungwani explains why the Pirates’ penalty was administered improperly.

“Playing football alone is not like playing tennis.” There is no offence when two players collide while vying for the ball, according to the former referee.

Maswanganyi and Maphosa [Modiba] clashed as they searched for the ball. In the event that pushing was punished, where exactly did the push occur?

“If you say there was a holding, was there a holding? We are unable to locate the push.” so holding needs to have an effect, he said.

There was no holding or pushing that had any effect. The referee gave the wrong penalty, but play should have been allowed to continue because that was a normal challenge.
