QB Jack Miller III of Florida Is No Longer With Program
Jack Miller III, a reserve quarterback, left the Gators after two seasons at Florida.
All Gators can confirm that quarterback Jack Miller III has left the Florida football program.
It’s unknown right now what Miller’s college football career will do next. A rising redshirt junior who will graduate in the fall of 2023, he has two seasons of eligibility that he can use elsewhere, according his UF biography.
The product of Scottsdale, Arizona, started his undergraduate career at Ohio State, where he redshirted for a year before losing the competition to start quarterback to CJ Stroud, who would go on to be selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Stroud would go on to redshirt his freshman season in 2021.
Following his four appearances off the bench that season, Miller used the NCAA transfer site to search for a new opportunity during the 2022 offseason.
Miller was called in by head coach Billy Napier and associates, who were brand-new to their roles at the University of Florida, to fight for the backup place behind Anthony Richardson, the starter and potential No. 4 overall choice in the same draft as Stroud.
The idea was that Miller, who had a year to develop in Napier’s system, may replace Richardson at quarterback.
But after arriving in Gainesville, Miller was bitten by the injury bug multiple times, which ended his stay at UF. During the 2022 training camp, he sustained a right thumb injury that necessitated surgery and prolonged his recovery period before he could resume play. According to Napier, tendinitis subsequently developed in his throwing shoulder, severely impeding him going into the 2023 campaign.
Max Brown took over the position in the early 2023 season, seizing the chance given by Miller’s injuries, but he never fully recovered to reach his actual backup status in the Gators’ offense. He first gave up the spot to Jalen Kitna in 2022.
By midseason, Brown, a walk-on graduate transfer from UConn, and Parker Leise, a true freshman walk-on from IMG Academy, had completely replaced Miller on the depth chart behind Graham Mertz.
Due to this, the former Buckeye only made one appearance in a game during his time at Florida, which was the Gators’ Las Vegas Bowl matchup with Oregon State. In a 30-3 loss to the Beavers, he ran for 13 yards and gained 180 yards on 59% of his passes.
Mertz and newly signed five-star quarterback DJ Lagway will be Florida’s scholarship quarterbacks going into the 2024 offseason.
