Perhaps this isn’t a huge surprise given that college football fans have already been observing Deion Sanders’ audacious attitude to program and self-promotion.
LB Kyeran Garcia of Florida called his recent signing with the Colorado Buffaloes “a dream come true.”
Kyeran Garcia’s destiny was altered by an invitation to participate in the Florida Athletic Coach Association All-Star game…
Kyeran Garcia’s first two seasons as a middle linebacker at Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar were marked by an eye-opening 282 tackles, and as a result, he was invited to participate in the Florida Athletic Coach Association All-Star game. It was an opportunity that ultimately altered his future because he took advantage of it.
Garcia dominated the sessions leading up to the all-star game, while going up against other elite athletes in the Sunshine State. Before then, he had previously considered twenty colleges, but they were from the FCS rankings, Ivy League schools, Group of Five programs, and service academics. He yearned for a Power 4 choice.
“I wasn’t really in communication with Colorado before that, but when I was at the all-star game, my head coach got me on a Zoom call and I was talking with all the coaches – ‘Prime Time’ (Deion Sanders), Coach (James) Chaney, who was previously at Lehigh (Senior High School) in Fort Myers, and the linebackers coach, coach (Andre’) Hart,” Garcia recounted.
“They said they were going to make me an offer. For that moment, I have worked hard my entire life. I have been anticipating that chance. I had the feeling that I would accept the first significant offer I received. And it so happened that I received it from Coach Prime.”
Colorado’s staff was impressed by Garcia’s resume, which goes well beyond his football accomplishments.
“They were talking to all my coaches and my coaches pretty much emphasized the same thing: my character,” Garcia stated. “Although I am usually quiet as a child, I work really hard.” My GPA is 4.29. These conversations took place prior to them activating my tape. They said they liked that I am a playmaker and a baller after seeing my footage.”
In the weeks preceding the official signing deadline, Garcia continued to thoroughly consider his options, including official visits to Delaware State and Air Force. He signed his national letter of intent and revealed his decision to play with the Buffaloes on Wednesday.
His words, “It’s been a dream come true,” “I never realized that playing at a high level required focus; I just knew that it did. I got so much attention when I posted the (commitment) message. I just want to maintain my attention and avoid letting anything cloud my judgment.”
Garcia claims that he is currently 220-pounds and 6-foot-1.5. He transferred from receiver to linebacker in the spring before his junior year at Dunbar.
“The fifth game of my junior season we played a team out of Georgia, Lowndes, and I ended up with about 20 tackles… that’s when it started clicking for me,” he explained. “I feel like I am built to be a linebacker with my ability to run the length of the field, play sideline-to-sideline with my speed at the middle linebacker position.”
Garcia gives appreciation to his cousin Melvin German for “helping stay on top of me with the athletic side” and his parents for “preaching that grades are the most important thing.” German was a standout student at Dunbar High School and later attended Pearl River Community College and FAU.
Garcia intends to enrol in CU’s Business program.
“I feel like by taking school seriously, I should be able to do something with that,” he stated.
Garcia has never been to Boulder, but because of the program’s social media exposure under Coach Prime, he believes he has a solid understanding of how it is operated. Garcia intends to go to the April 27 spring training game of the Buffaloes.
“Colorado is all over online so it is not really too hard to see the facilities and see how they practice and play,” he explained. “Just seeing how Coach Prime operates and just seeing the brotherhood they have, that they don’t let anything go to their head, I felt like this is the place for me.”
Garcia is aware that he cannot become complacent as he has four months left before the next chapter of his football career begins.
“I’ll bring a competitor, a lot of hard effort, and an upbeat, optimistic attitude. I’ll be prepared to work “said he. “I want to enter that game with a good possibility of seeing the field, whether it be for special teams or second-string players. I want people to turn around and exclaim, “Wow, who is that?”
