Rain postponed the second of the No. 3 Florida (1-0) consecutive games against St. John’s on Sunday. There won’t be a new date for the games.

Florida’s next two-game midweek series will take place Tuesday night against North Florida (6 p.m.). On Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., UNF will play the Gators again at Condron Family Ballpark.

UF lost 9-5 to St. John’s in its season opener on Friday before 7,898 fans. The Gators fell into an early 7-0 hole and couldn’t rally back.

Florida enters the 2024 season as one of the favorites to win the SEC. The Gators return five starters, including two-way standout and preseason national player of the year candidate Jac Caglianone, from a team that went 54-17 and reached the College World Series Finals before falling to national champion LSU.

Three things to remember from UF’s season-opening defeat on Friday night are as follows:

UF baseball lefty Cade Fisher had a rough first outing of the season, giving up five hits, two walks, and one hit batter in two and a half innings. Fisher gave up six runs, five of them earned. He didn’t help himself when the Red Storm led 5-0 after a three-run second inning when he erred on a sacrifice bunt effort.

Coach Kevin O’Sullivan of Florida baseball stated, “From a pitching sense, we walked eight and we hit a guy so we surrendered nine free bases.” “Cade’s been great for us all fall and spring, maybe just nervousness on opening night.”

Caglainone, catcher Luke Heyman, and shortstop Colby Shelton of Florida’s 3-4-5 hitters combined for a 5 for 12 total with two RBIs and a run scored. Shelton, an Alabama transfer, brought St. John’s advantage to 7-5 with his first home run as a Gator, a 400-foot blast to right……
