Mushkegowuk Cup bring hundreds of hockey lovers to Timmins

 

This weekend is hockey weekend in Timmins, where hundreds of First Nations kids from all around the area are competing in the 15th annual Mushkegowuk Cup (opens in a new tab) to see how good they are.

Four local arenas (opens in a new tab) are hosting about 700 competitors for friendly competition from Mushkegowuk Territory(opens in a new tab) and other regions of the nation.

According to organizers, it’s a chance for young Indigenous people to interact with others from all across the country and experience a bigger community while participating in their favorite sport.

One of the tournament’s organizers, Richard Soloman, said, “It means a lot for the youngsters; they adore it.”

They also get to participate in some local shopping. If they require it, some more recent equipment. It’s basically a case of the kids becoming friends and getting to meet kids from other places. They come up here to play hockey from their home. Not just playing at home, but in a different venue, with other players and styles.

The weekend is also filled with additional events, such as appearances by the 3Nolans, who are Ted Nolan(opens in a new tab) and his NHL-playing sons Brandon and Jordan. On February 17, the Nolans will autograph cards and pose for pictures at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex, the McIntyre Arena, and the Mountjoy Arena.
