Caitlin Clark needs eight more points to shatter the all-time scoring record for women’s basketball in the NCAA.
Why it matters: The West Des Moines native could have played practically anywhere after being pursued by universities like Notre Dame, but she chose to stay in Iowa for her rise to national prominence.
The fact that she is creating this historic record while still being known by most people in the state by first name speaks volumes about both her and us.
Leading the news: Clark, who is scoring over 32 points per game this season, should have little trouble surpassing 3,527 career points scored by former Washington standout Kelsey Plum when they play Michigan (16-9) at home on Thursday night.
Clark is now within striking distance of Pete Maravich’s 3,667 career points, the men’s record that has held for 54 years, with five games remaining in the regular season in addition to the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments.
The mystery: According to information provided to Axios by ticket vendor Vivid Seats, game tickets are priced an average of $250 each on Thursday.
Resale tickets range in price from $350 to $500.
Reality check: No. 4 Iowa utterly crumbled against Nebraska last Sunday, and Clark probably ought to have set the record. Clark lost in the fourth quarter without scoring any points.
