Giants elevate three coaches and add two rookies to the staff

The New York Giants announced the recruitment of two new staff members and the elevation of three of its current coaches.

Mike Kafka, who now serves as offensive coordinator, will also assume the post of assistant head coach. Shea Tierney, the quarterbacks coach, will have the added responsibility of offensive passing game coordinator, while Jerome Henderson, the secondary coach, will coordinate the defense passing game.

The two new hires are defensive assistant Zak Kuhr and outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen.

The actions take place one day after the Giants hired Tim Kelly, the tight ends coach, and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, both of whom were Tennessee coaches during the previous campaign. The Giants signed Michael Ghobrial as special teams coordinator, Carmen Bricillo as offensive line coach, and Joel Thomas as running backs coach earlier in the offseason.

Bullen was the outside linebackers coach and pass rush coordinator for the University of Illinois football program for the previous two seasons. After spending four years coaching the Cardinals, Bullen brought his eleven years of NFL coaching expertise to the Fighting Illini in January 2023.

Bullen joined the staff as assistant linebackers coach and served as Arizona’s outside linebackers coach from 2020 to 2022. He also worked with the linebackers and defensive line for the Miami Dolphins for seven years, from 2012 to 2018.

With 89 total sacks from 2020–2021, Bullen’s outside linebacker group helped the Cardinals rank seventh in the NFL. 50 of those arrived through the position of outside linebacker. Three Cardinals outside linebackers—Markus Golden, Chandler Jones, and Haason Reddick—posted 10 or more sacks in that time frame.

Bullen coached the defensive backs at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, for three seasons (2009–2011) as a graduate assistant before joining the Dolphins.
