The Cincinnati Reds are continuing their offseason pitching investment with the signing of veteran left-hander Brent Suter to a one-year contract. Fansided’s Robert Murray claims: According to those familiar with the negotiations, free agent pitcher Brent Suter and the Cincinnati Reds have reached an agreement on a contract, subject to a physical. Suter will receive $2.5 million from the agreement in 2024, along with a $3.5 million club option with a $500,000 buyout. Eight teams expressed interest in 34-year-old Suter, with several considering him as a starting pitcher, according to sources. Teams were drawn to his ability to pitch numerous innings out of the bullpen, split against right-handed hitters, and keep the ball in the park (three home runs allowed in 69.1 innings). Suter’s status with the Reds is still unknown, but heading into the summer, they desperately needed a starter. While the team boasts a number of youthful and promising rotation players, concerns about their health and inexperience exist. The Reds’ current favored rotation is Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Frankie Montas, Graham Ashcraft, and Andrew Abbott; however, all save Abbott missed a substantial amount of time in just the previous season. In addition to swingman Nick Martinez, who the Reds added this offseason, Brandon Williamson is also a rotation candidate. Another player on the 40-man roster is Levi Stoudt. Suter played in 57 games for Colorado last season, going 4-3. He played for the Brewers for seven years before joining the Rockies. He is 40-22 with a 3.49 ERA in his career. In his 253 career games, he has made 41 starts.
