Chelsea may have just handed Arsenal the title

Indeed, Arsenal’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on March 1, 2026, has firmly positioned them as the frontrunners in what’s shaping up to be a thrilling Premier League title race and many fans believe Chelsea’s performance may have effectively handed their London rivals the initiative in the battle for the trophy

After this pivotal derby clash, Arsenal now tops the league standings with an impressive 64 points from 29 matches played. Second-placed Manchester City trail by 5 points with 59 points from 28 games, though they do have a game in hand. Third-placed Liverpool sits further back on 55 points, making it increasingly look like a two-horse race between Arsenal and City.

The match itself was a tense, end-to-end affair that showcased the best of top-flight English football. Arsenal struck first in the 21st minute when William Saliba rose highest to head home a corner from Bukayo Saka, capitalizing on poor marking in Chelsea’s box. The home side fought back strongly and found an equalizer just before halftime, as a cross from Raheem Sterling took a deflection off Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie and looped over David Raya into the net. The decisive moment came in the 66th minute, when Jurrien Timber latched onto a through-ball from Martin Ødegaard and calmly slotted past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.

Chelsea’s task became even harder in the 82nd minute when Pedro Neto was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Declan Rice. Despite being down to 10 men, the Blues pushed desperately for an equalizer and came agonizingly close in stoppage time  first through a powerful shot from Conor Gallagher that was brilliantly saved by Raya, then from a header by Levi Colwill that was ruled offside after a VAR check.

Arsenal’s remaining fixtures include several tough tests, most notably the much-anticipated showdown against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on April 18 a game that could well decide the destination of the title if both teams maintain their current form. They also face trips to Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur in the run-in, while City still have to take on Liverpool and Manchester United.

With their current lead and a squad that appears to be hitting its stride at the right time, Arsenal will be confident of ending their wait for a Premier League crown. However, Manchester City’s proven track record of winning titles in tight races means nothing can be taken for granted just yet.
