Browns Sign LB Caleb Johnson, DT Jayden Peevy to Reserves/Futures Contracts

After signing nine of their own players to reserves/futures deal, the Cleveland Browns have signed a pair of outside players to reserve/futures deals. The team added linebacker Caleb Johnson and defensive tackle Jayden Peevy over the past two days.

Johnson was an undrafted rookie out of the University of Miami(FL). He spent time with three different practice squads this season, starting with the New York Jets and spending time with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

At his Pro Day, Johnson measured in 5’11 3/8″ and 228 pounds. He tested reasonably well, especially in terms of straight line speed and explosiveness. He ran a 4.44 40-yard dash and had a 10’6″ broad jump. His agility is decent, but not great as he had some tightness in his hips with a 7.4 3-cone.

Curiously, Johnson didn’t register much production in college. He started his career at UCLA before transferring to Miami. In his junior season with the Bruins, he was able to record 7 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and an interception in just seven games. He didn’t do much in 11 games as a senior and had similar results in his year with the Hurricanes, recording just 26 solo tackles, four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. However, he did force a pair of fumbles.

Johnson joins Charlie Thomas III as the two linebackers the Browns have on reserves/futures contracts to this point.

Peevy just finished his second season in the NFL. He was signed an undrafted free agent by Tennessee Titans and appeared in two games that season. This past year, he spent time on the practice squads of both the Titans and Carolina Panthers.

Peevy’s production coming out of college was pretty average. His final year at Texas A&M, he registered 17 solo tackles, six tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. His performance of the combine was mediocre. He ran a 5.3 40, had a 8’4″ broad jump and a 27″ vertical.

The one thing that stands out about Peevy is his length. The Browns have been a team that values arm length and Peevy has an 85 3/8″ wingspan. His arms are 35 1/4″. Peevy joins fellow defensive tackle Chris Williams, who was also signed to a reserve/futures deal. Notably, Williams also has long arms, measuring 34 3/4″.

The Browns now have 11 players signed to reserves/futures deals to this point.
