The Lions are optimistic going into the summer because they have plenty of budget room and no significant free-agent departures to deal with.

Even though the Detroit Lions lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, head coach Dan Campbell’s brief stay with the team has been a huge success. After only three victories in 2021, he led the team to within a few plays of the Super Bowl this season.

With this team heading into the summer break, things look good for 2024. As it attempts to build on its 2023 successes, the team has a sizable budget space and is not facing any big departures in free agency. With Josh Reynolds set to hit free agency, the Lions may consider upgrading at wide receiver. The guard position is another area of concern. The group may also try to bolster its defense by adding a pass-rusher or cornerback, who is desperately required.

The NFL Draft and free agency will be key for Detroit, but the team could also look to make additions via trade. Here are two trade targets for the Lions this offseason.

Charles Omenihu (DE), an All-Pro selection of the Kansas City Chiefs, had a fantastic sophomore season, recording 11.5 sacks, 33 quarterback hits, and his first trip to the Pro Bowl. However, since he was the Lions’ only true pass-rushing danger, double teams were frequently used to neutralize him. Hutchinson’s opposite, a productive pass-rusher, opens up space for the Michigan recruit and increases the danger of this defensive line.

With 57 sacks in 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs defense tied for second place in the NFL thanks in part to Charles Omenihu. Omenihu only started one game, but he still provided seven sacks and two forced fumbles. Omenihu, who will be a free agent in 2025, was one of four Chiefs players with at least six sacks. A player like Charles Omenihu could become available in the trade market if the Chiefs decide to re-sign Chris Jones because it will leave the team with much less money to allocate to the other great pass-rushers on the squad.

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow
Following his 2021 season with 1,000 yards, Hunter Renfrow’s value has declined significantly. In the last two years, he has only gained 585 receiving yards, while missing seven games in 2022. Renfrow remained in place despite trade speculations, but the slot receiver would benefit from a shift in scenery.

Amon-Ra Although Josh Reynolds is about to hit free agency, is the organization confident that St. Brown or Jameson Williams will step up in his place should Reynolds leave? St. Brown’s ability to go open on intermediate routes and Williams’ ability to stretch the field are well complemented by a consistent underneath threat. Though his recent lack of output will make him accessible at a low cost, Renfrow has the potential to be a go-to receiver.
