According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers met with the agent of running back Aaron Jones this week at the NFL Scouting Combine to talk about a potential wage reduction for Jones in the last year of his contract.

Silverstein claims that the two parties are trying to come to an agreement on a salary that will fulfill Jones’s expectations for his free agency while also lowering his salary cup number.

According to Silverstein, if they are unable to come to an agreement over the next two weeks, Jones may be released by the Packers and given the chance to consider his choices in free agency.

Jones, who is in the last year of a four-year, $48 million contract, will make $11 million in base pay, with the possibility of earning $258,000 in roster incentives each game and a $500,000 workout bonus.

According to Spotrac, the Packers’ current cap space is anticipated to be $12,734,061; however, a few roster changes could free up further space. In addition to adjusting the contracts of Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, which saved the team about $7 million in cap space, Silverstein mentioned that the Packers could remove linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and left tackle David Bakhtiari in order to free up about $30 million before the 2019 season.

Jones, 29, participated in 11 games in the previous campaign and gained 656 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in addition to 233 yards and one touchdown via the air. He gained 118 yards and three touchdowns in the Packers’ wild-card victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which was greatly aided by him. In the divisional round, he also recorded 108 rushing yards against the San Francisco 49ers.

Although Green Bay would prefer to hang onto Jones, it may pursue a running back in free agency to take his position given its increased cap room. Several elite running backs, including Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley, and others, will be available in free agency this year.

With the additional cap space, Silverstein added, Green Bay might try to extend quarterback Jordan Love.
