The division-rival San Francisco 49ers have appointed Sorensen as their next defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With the 49ers, Sorensen, 45, has advanced swiftly from his position as defensive assistant in 2022 to defensive pass game specialist last season and defensive coordinator currently.

In the past three years, Sorensen has served as the 49ers’ third defensive coordinator. Having lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, the 49ers dismissed Steve Wilks, and he takes his place. DeMeco Ryans, the current head coach of the Houston Texans, was before Wilks.

Following a decade-long career mostly as a special teams and backup player, Sorensen started his new chapter in the NFL in 2013 as the assistant special teams coach for the Seahawks. During his eight years in Seattle, he won several titles, but his most notable role was defensive backs coach from 2017 to 2020.

In 2021, Sorensen also worked for a year as Urban Meyer’s special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville· Jaguars.
