Mike Tomlin: Russell Wilson is “pole position” to be the Steelers’ starting quarterback.

Only one of the quarterbacks on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster, starter caliber two, can start. Following the trade of Kenny Pickett, Tomlin provided some insight on Sunday regarding rookies Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who might be Tomlin’s starting lineup. “At least initially, we’ve been very open about the hierarchy,” Tomlin said to reporters during the NFL’s annual meetings in Orlando, Florida. “I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved.”

Wilson, 35, appears to be on the right track based on this clarity, following a turbulent two years with the Denver Broncos. Tomlin remarked, “Russell is a veteran, man.” “He has an established preparation routine. He has a lot of experience in this league and can inspire running backs, tight ends, receivers, and other players.”

Fields will benefit from Wilson’s ability to develop leadership over an extended period of time, according to Tomlin, since the quarterbacks “do some of the informal things at this time of the year.” Wilson played in two Super Bowls with the Seattle Seahawks, winning one of them. Fields, 25, completed 13 games with the Chicago Bears last season, throwing for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also added four touchdowns and 657 running yards. This offseason, he was dealt to the Steelers for a 2025 sixth-round pick that, under certain circumstances, may be upgraded to a fourth-round pick.
