Harrison smith turn down his new contract with vikings due to …
Harrison Smith isn’t done playing football just yet. The longest-tenured player for the Minnesota Vikings is coming back for a 13th season. The Vikings announced Wednesday afternoon they’ve reached an agreement to bring the veteran safety back for the 2024 season. According to Tom Pelissero with NFL Network, Smith is returning on a restructured contract for about $9 million. The team gets some salary cap relief, and Smith is back with the only team he’s played for his entire career. Smith was originally due about $19 million this season.
In 2012, the Vikings selected Smith, the 29th overall pick out of Notre Dame, in the first round. With the Vikings, he has made 175 career starts and six Pro Bowl selections. In 2017, he was chosen for the First Team All-Pro.
Smith recorded 94 tackles and three sacks in his 17 starts during the previous campaign. Though 2023 was only the second time in his career that he failed to record a takeaway, he has 34 career interceptions. Along with Cam Bynum, he’ll offer experience to the secondary and support to Akayleb Evans and Andrew Booth Jr., two rookie defensive backs.
