Parents undoubtedly understood that Brock Purdy’s journey from “Mr. Irrelevant” to a starting quarterback in the Super Bowl was nothing short of a fairy tale.
Every step of the journey for Brock has been shared by his parents, Shawn and Carrie Purdy. They witnessed him pick up a football for the first time and heard his name called by a packed stadium. And it was that joyous occasion that made his father whole again. In December 2022, he became well-known for breaking down in tears as he witnessed his son start and win his first NFL game for the San Francisco 49ers.
Many football fans find it fascinating that Brock went from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft to becoming a starting quarterback; nevertheless, he noted that having his family around to see it all made it even more memorable.
“It just means a lot because throughout my whole life, the ups and downs of playing quarterback in general … they’re the people at home that believe in you and they always see the best in you,” he told CBS Bay Area following the game.
The support of his parents has continued to drive the football player. “They’ve believed in me even though I was the last draft pick,” Brock said after the game. “They’ve always been telling me, ‘You’re good enough and we know that you can do it.’ And so, to see them after that performance meant a lot to me and [I’m] so very blessed to have them as my family.”
On Feb. 11, Shawn and Carrie witnessed another unforgettable moment in their son’s career: his first Super Bowl appearance. While Brock and the 49ers ultimately lost to defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, during overtime at the 2024 Super Bowl in Las Vegas, the quarterback said he was “honored and thankful” to get the opportunity to play in the big game.
