Mercedes pursuit of Red Bull Formula One superstar Max Verstappen could see a record-shattering contract offer.

Austrian newspaper Oe24 reports that Toto Wolff and his Mercedes AMG Petronas team could be set to offer the Dutch driver a contract worth up to $150 million Euros ($220 million CDN) per year including bonuses.

The newspaper also reports that Verstappen is set to meet with Mercedes this week at the Miami Grand Prix.

A contract of that magnitude and an imminent meeting between the 26-year-old driver and the Mercedes team that was for years his chief rival is hard to fathom, and would certainly send shockwaves through paddocks of auto racing’s glitziest circuit.

Wolff denied plans to meet with Verstappen this week in Miami on Monday night, speaking to Reuters Television at an event in New York.

“No, that’s one of the rumours,” he said. “People make up meetings, make up what’s happening with the drivers but these things should be behind closed doors and everything that’s been out there was not really the right thing.”

Rumours of internal discord have surrounded Red Bull Racing this season, often swirling around team prinicipal Christian Horner. Verstappen’s father Jos has publicly called out Horner, saying the team is in danger of being torn apart if the Red Bull team principal remained at the helm.

The team has been fabulously successful with Horner running the show, with Verstappen winning the past three driver’s championships and Red Bull winning the past two constructor’s titles. Whether the majority of that is attributable to Horner, Verstappen, or the race car is the billion dollar question.
