Garrett Cooper had been told by the Red Sox that he’s going to play a lot, but then exited early in his debut

With the Sunday-day cash consideration acquisition of Garrett Cooper from the Cubs, the Red Sox felt they had found their short-term first baseman. However, Cooper left the game with a contusion after reliever Sean Hjelle’s fastball struck him in the right wrist in the fifth inning of the 4-0 victory over the Giants on Tuesday night. The Red Sox’s Cooper, who had struck out in his first two at-bats, was fine, according to manager Alex Cora after the game. “We escaped a gunshot,” Cora remarked.
