Breaking news:Masataka Yoshida latest Red Sox player to land on serious injured now

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox continue to suffer from injuries, as designated hitter Masataka Yoshida was placed on the injured list ahead to Wednesday’s 6-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Yoshida injured his hand on Sunday, becoming the 13th Red Sox player to be placed on the injured list this season. Yoshida joins shortstop Trevor Story and first baseman Triston Casas as Opening Day starters who are now out. Story is gone for the season after having surgery to repair a fractured shoulder, while Casas will be sidelined for at least a few weeks due to torn rib cartilage.

Three members of Boston’s first starting rotation are also now injured: Nick Pivetta, Brayan Bello, and Garrett Whitlock. That list does not include Lucas Giolito, who the Red Sox signed as a free agent to improve the rotation but had Tommy John surgery in spring training. One positive piece of news: According to manager Alex Cora, projected starting second baseman Vaughn Grissom, who has been on the injured list since the beginning of the season due to a right hamstring ailment, is anticipated to be activated Friday if all goes well.
