Steelers update: How Will Payton Wilson Fit in Defense?
In the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected NC State linebacker Payton Wilson with pick No. 98, appearing to have acquired a steal of a draft pick.
In addition to being named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, the Butkus Award winner for best linebacker in the nation, the Bednarik wAard winner for best defensive player in the country, and a unanimous All-American, the dynamic Wolfpack playmaker was one of the most productive linebackers in college football last season.
For an athlete of his size, Wilson’s pre-draft testing results were likewise exceptional. The 233-pound, 6-foot-3 7/8 linebacker demonstrated remarkable high-end speed and agility by clocking 4.43 seconds for the 40-yard dash, 4.2 seconds for the shuttle, and 6.85 seconds for the three-cone drill. Wilson became something of a draft unicorn as a result, but now that he’s in the Steelers, the coaching staff will have to find out how to best integrate him with the team’s linebacker corps and defense.
With Patrick Queen already signed and Elandon Roberts and Cole Holcomb returned, the Steelers didn’t have a clear need at linebacker, so they can afford to be patient with Wilson’s growth.
