Talladoga, Alabama — Following a collision at the Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday night, Erik Jones was assessed and later released from a nearby hospital.

Jones finished the GEICO 500 on Sunday at Lap 156 of 188 after a tangle in the 2.66-mile track’s third turn forced his No. 43 Legacy Motor Club Camry nose-first into the outside retaining wall as he was among a group of fellow Toyota drivers. In a field of 38 cars, he came in third.

Jones was discharged from a Birmingham hospital at about 11:30 p.m. CT, and Legacy Motor Club confirmed shortly before midnight CT that he was returning home to North Carolina. Although the team stated that Jones was assessed, no other information was released on Sunday evening.

After leaving the infield medical centre following the incident, Jones responded to a question regarding his back, saying, “I’m sore, it just really stretched it out a lot.” It will therefore be a demanding week as we work to heal and feel better in time for next week, but everything will be OK.

Following a post-race inspection, NASCAR officials announced that the No. 43 Toyota would be returned to the NASCAR Research & Development Centre for additional assessment.
